Block Parties Success!

Appleton Horizons, Joining With Others to Create Change Vision team, hosted four block parties in different neighborhoods of Appleton earlier this month.  The Schirms, Smiths, McElroy’s, and Glimsdals all hosted parties.  Approximately 100 Appleton residents attended making it a resounding success for the first year.  Many were heard saying that they want to do it twice a year, and the goal for next year is to once again hold block parties, but to increase the number of parties, while maintaining the high average attendance.

Well Great News! The Garden Plots have been tilled.

Well Great News! The Garden Plots have been tilled.

Following the Community Vision event on Sunday May 17, Free plants will be distributed to all those wishing them. The CCA (prison) greenhouse has generously started some for us. We will have a variety of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, cantaloupe and watermelon plants.

Also there will be some free seeds for all who wish to partake. Come one, come all, meet new friends and have a good time planting.   – Alyce

Tonight there is a frost warning, but the rest of the week looks very good. Seed crops can be planted now, Water after planting and pray for RAIN.

Mark out your plots stake the corners, I want at least 12 inches in from the grass so I can mow the grass away from your plot.

Same for shooters so they can mow too.

Sets should be able to plant during the coming week check out weather reports for possible frost warnings. I am going to plant my sets this coming week starting Monday.

Bob Clemens is going to move out horse manure Sunday or so I asked him if he would dump two loads at Shooters and a couple at my place, its mostly straw but is very good for the plots. He did not say yes or no. only if I am around at home and go to Shooters to show where to put it.  – Jon

Appleton’s Future Vision Event

This afternoon we had our visioning event. It was attended by about 115 people, which was more than most people expected, but considerably short of our goal of 180! I was happy to see that most of those attending signed up to help in at least one area. Here are the action areas the group identified as most pressing:
1. Focus on early childhood, youth and school.
2. Help people meet their urgent needs.
3. Create more and better paying jobs.
4. Build individual and community assets and hold on to them.
5. Join with others to create change.
6. Fight racism.

The hopes that the group agreed are most important to our vision of Appleton’s future are:
1. Pride in our community.
2. A buy local attitude.
3. Effective and responsive leadership.

All of these are ideals for our vision of future Appleton are important and worthwhile. I’m hoping that we will be able to motivate more people in the community to get involved and excited!
